Ukulele Building Project Page 1
OK folks, less than a couple of weeks before we start the great ukulele
build-off. As Bob has told all of you, all of the materials needed to
build the ukulele will be included in your $75 materials fee. (Remember,
$20 of that is your dues.) There are some materials and supplies that
you’ll need for the first couple of classes that you’ll keep to build the
hundreds of ukuleles that you’ll build after this one. Many of you will
already have some of these items. All the materials were found at Home
Depot and I’m sure Lowe’s carries similar items as well. Please let me
know if you cannot locate any items, I’ll do my best to find them for you.
PLEASE BRING TO THE FIRST CLASS:
MATERIALS:
1 sheet 3/4” x 24” X 48” birch (or hardwood) plywood
You can find these in “quarter sheet” form. Do not
buy a full 4’ X 8’ sheet!
1- 8 foot long douglass fir 2” X 2” - straight!
1 -piece 2” X 4”, about 24”
I- 2” (I.D.) X 12” long galvanised pipe (nipple)
1- piece of plain white posterboard( Not shown) Min. size 12" x
12".Shown is1/8” thick Lexan (not Plexi-glass), min. size 12” X 12”.
The Lexan makes a better template, but we will use posterboard for the initial
template.
1- draw latch (or similar clasp)
That does it for the materials. Please prepare them in the following way.
If you can not cut these to dimension bring the materials to the class anyway;
we’ll do our best to cut them for you. If you can cut them beforehand
please do so. It’ll eliminate a log jam at the saws. We’ll use
these pieces for our body mold.
So, with your plywood, cut 6 pieces 6” X 16” (or just a
bit smaller to allow for the blade kerf) Exact dimension aren’t critical
but they MUST all be exactly the same size. With the other piece of
plywood then cut 3 pieces 12” X 16”. Again, not critical but 2 of
these pieces should be exactly the same size. These will become part
of our Go-deck
Cut the 2” X 2’s into 4 lengths of exactly 20” long.
Try to cut the ends square! These are the uprights for our Go-decks.
The draw latch is for our body mold.
The Lexan we’ll use as a body pattern and the 2” X 4”
will turn into a sanding block. Don’t worry about them now, just bring
them and we’ll make these things during class.
SUPPLIES:
1 bottle Titebond glue ORIGINAL (red cap) only!
Several sheets of woodworking sandpaper. Spring for the good stuff if you can,
it’s worth it. Grits 80, 120, 220.
Exacto/hobby knives of your choice.
Fine toothed cut-off saw
Chisel--sharp! 1/4” to 1/2” wide.
Clothespins - 30-40
Rubber bands - 30-40
various clamps you might have.
#2 pencils- just like in school.
Whatever else you have that you’re comfortable with that you think you might
need.
Hana Lima has offered to sell us their ukulele book and the plan we’ll be
using at their cost in order to help our cause. I shouldn’t mention the
price because this is posted on the guild site, but it’s so cheap you might
want several!
I’m sure I’ve forgotten something in which case an update will be posted on
the website. Feel free to contact me with any questions. And again,
mahalo for taking part in this awesome project.
