Minutes from 9/14/2019

Aloha guild members. We had a small, but enthusiastic turnout for our BIUG gathering September 14th at Woodley White’s Naʻālehu home.

Treasurer Tom Russell is off-island, so we will get our financial and membership reports during our December 14th meeting at Tom’s Kona shop.

President Carlos Newcomb continued with guild plans for the 2019 exhibit at the Isaacs Art Center in Kamuela. We will have wall and table space for our display of instruments and tools. Additional details are pending, but the show will be from November 16th to the 27th, with a November 21st meet and greet for visitors. We’re looking for volunteers!

Woodley began the meeting by demonstrating how to make multi-layered laminated bindings by gluing together several light and dark veneers and woods strips with Original Gorilla Glue – an interesting glue that foams as it dries - and scraping off the excess glue while still wet. Following show and tell and lunch, we returned to his shop to watch him saw the laminated wood into completed and beautiful bindings. He then wrapped two completed bindings in tape in mirror images of each other to insure accurate bending. Can’t wait to try this!

During show and tell Barbara Bach showed us a pack of Neiko Quick Change Stubby Drill Bits. She finds them useful on smaller drill presses and for accurately drilling end pin jack holes into heels blocks.

And once you’ve drilled the holes, Carlos Newcomb mentioned a clever tool from LMI that allows easy installation of end pin jacks. It’s the End pin jack installer, with a 1.5" pin w/attached wire.

Carlos also showed us his side bender in which he installed a LMI Temperature controller for electric heating blankets and wrapped the end rollers in 1/8” sheets of silicone, the same material that the heating blanket is made of. He also has full sized prints of the bender plans that he would be happy to share with any one interested in making a bender. Might make another good workshop!

For those of you with jointers or planers, Terry Davis offered up a quick and easy jointer/planer knife-sharpening device called the Quick-Hone.

Sam Rosen repairs damaged binding edges using Glue Boost. He showed us an example after he built up several layers of Glue Boost and then sanded to shape. He added that this must be applied over the final finish. You can check this out at https://gluboost.com/.

If you like your fretboards to match the shape of your soundhole, Chris Stewart mentioned a quick and easy to make device that marks the underside of fretboards from inside the soundhole.

Hope to see you at our exhibit in the Isaacs Art Center from November 16th to the 27th and the 17th annual 'Ukulele and Slack Key Guitar Festival at the Kahilu Theatre from November 21st to 23rd - both in Kamuela.
